Bangladesh Secures Vital Win Over Sri Lanka In T20 World Cup 2024 Clash
Bangladesh edged out Sri Lanka with a narrow 2-wicket victory in their T20 World Cup 2024 Group D opener at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, June 8. This win has pushed Sri Lanka to the brink of elimination.
Mustafizur Rahman (3/17) and Rishad Hossain (3/22) played pivotal roles in restricting Sri Lanka to a modest 124 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. Mahmudullah (16* off 13 balls) then guided Bangladesh to victory, sealing the run chase in the penultimate over.

Bangladesh's chase saw significant contributions from Towhid Hridoy (40 off 20 balls) and Litton Das (36 off 38 balls), who shared a crucial 63-run stand. However, Wanindu Hasaranga (2/32) triggered a collapse by dismissing both set batters.
From a strong position at 91 for 3, Bangladesh slipped to 113 for 8 within six overs. Nuwan Thushara (4/18) and Matheesha Pathirana (1/27) chipped in with wickets, making the game competitive.
Mahmudullah's Composure
With 11 runs needed off the final two overs, Dasun Shanaka was tasked with bowling the penultimate over. Mahmudullah kept his cool, hitting a six on the first ball to tilt the equation in Bangladesh's favour. He scored the winning runs on the final ball, securing a two-wicket win.
Sri Lanka's Struggle
Dhananjaya de Silva also claimed a wicket for Sri Lanka but could not prevent the 2014 champions from facing an early exit from the tournament. Earlier, Sri Lanka lost opener Kusal Mendis early, but Pathum Nissanka (47 off 28 balls) kept the scoreboard ticking before falling to Mustafizur in the ninth over.
Contributions from Middle Order
Dhananjaya (21 off 26 balls), Charith Asalanka (19 off 21 balls), and Angelo Mathews (16 off 19 balls) contributed to Sri Lanka's total but failed to push their score close to a defendable target of 150 on the Dallas surface.
Tournament Standings
With this result, Bangladesh remains third in Group D, having won their only match so far. Bottom-placed Sri Lanka is virtually out of the tournament and will need other results to go their way even if they win their remaining two matches.
