T20 World Cup 2024: Assessing Bangladesh's Semi-Final Qualification Prospects

Bangladesh's journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been a rollercoaster. Despite losing two of their three Super 8 matches, they still have a mathematical chance to reach the semi-finals. The path to the last-four round is complex and depends on several factors aligning perfectly.

For Bangladesh to advance, they need India to defeat Australia by 55 runs, assuming the team batting first scores 160 runs. Following this, Bangladesh must secure a victory over Afghanistan by at least 31 runs. If these conditions are met, Bangladesh will face South Africa in the first semi-final in Tarouba, Trinidad.

Bangladesh's T20 WC 2024 Semi-Final Hopes

The likelihood of these scenarios playing out is slim. India are favourites to beat Australia in St Lucia on Monday, June 24. However, even if Australia wins, the margin is not expected to be significant enough to benefit Bangladesh.

Adding to the challenge, Afghanistan recently defeated the 2021 champions Australia by 21 runs and are likely to pose a tough challenge for Bangladesh in their final Super 8 match. Given these circumstances, Bangladesh's chances of making it to the semi-finals appear minimal.

South Africa secured their spot in the semi-finals from Super 8 Group 2 on Monday. They successfully chased a revised target of 123 runs in 16.1 overs after rain reduced the second innings to 17 overs.

Winning all three of their Super 8 matches, South Africa topped Group 2. They will compete against the second-placed team from Group 1 in Trinidad on Thursday, June 27, at 6:00 AM IST.
