Bangladesh Enters Super 8s In T20 World Cup Following Nepal Triumph

Bangladesh advanced to the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup with a 21-run win over Nepal on Sunday. This victory came just two days after Nepal's narrow one-run loss to South Africa. Despite being bowled out for just 106, Bangladesh managed to secure the win, thanks to a stellar bowling performance.

No Bangladesh player scored more than Shakib Al Hasan's 17 runs. Dipendra Singh Airee (2-22), Rohit Paudel (2-20), and Sandeep Lamichhane (2-17) were impressive with the ball, restricting Bangladesh to a modest total. However, this score proved sufficient due to an exceptional bowling display from Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Bangladesh into Super 8s After Nepal Win

Tanzim Hasan Sakib delivered a career-best T20I performance, taking 4-7. He dismissed Kushal Bhurtel and Anil Sah within three deliveries in the third over and later took the wickets of Paudel and Sundeep Jora. Nepal found themselves struggling at 26-5.

Nepal's Response and Final Over Drama

Kushal Malla tried to steady Nepal's innings with a match-high 27 runs off 40 deliveries. Mustafizur Rahman (3-7) and Shakib Al Hasan (2-9) bowled efficiently, with Rahman dismissing Malla as he looped a shot to Najmul Hossain Shanto at mid-off. Nepal needed 22 runs in the final over but lost their last two wickets on the first two balls, sealing Bangladesh's victory.

Netherlands' Exit and Sri Lanka's Dominance

The Netherlands' hopes of progressing ended with Bangladesh's win. Their tournament concluded with an 81-run defeat to Sri Lanka in Kingstown. Sri Lanka set a target of 202, the joint-highest of the tournament alongside Australia versus England. Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka each scored 46 runs, with Asalanka hitting five sixes off 21 balls.

The Dutch team fell short in their chase, being all out for 118 with three overs remaining. Nuwan Thushara claimed a hat-trick for Sri Lanka, further demoralising the Netherlands.

Data Debrief: Bangladesh's Defence of a Low Total

Bangladesh supporters were anxious when their team managed only 106 runs against Nepal, who have shown potential for upsets in this tournament. However, composed bowling ensured that this total was enough. This tally of 106 runs is now recorded as the lowest ever successfully defended score in T20 World Cup history.
