Champions Trophy 2025: Bailey Confirms Warner Will Not Return For Australia
David Warner had hinted at a possible return from retirement for the Champions Trophy 2025 if Australia needed him. However, national selector George Bailey has firmly closed the door on his comeback for next year's 50-over tournament.
Warner ended his international career after Australia's exit from the T20 World Cup last month. Despite this, he left open the possibility of returning for the Champions Trophy, a title that has eluded him throughout his career.

Bailey stated that the national team intends to move forward without Warner, despite his interest in participating in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year. "Our understanding is that David is retired, and [he] should be commended on what has been an incredible career across all three formats. Certainly, our planning is that he won't be there in Pakistan," Bailey told ESPNCricinfo.
Warner had already made a lengthy post about his retirement and hinted at passing the baton to young Jake Fraser-McGurk. Fraser-McGurk has been named in recent limited-overs teams as Warner's potential successor.
Bailey suggested that Warner might be "stirring the pot" with his comments about a comeback during the Champions Trophy. The selector added that the team is planning "to transition to some different players." "You never know when Bull's joking...think he's just stirring the pot a bit. He's had a wonderful career, can't celebrate it enough, and think as time goes by, his legacy of what he has done for Australia and we reflect back on that, the legend of a player is only going to continue to grow," Bailey said.
Youthful Squad for Upcoming Tour
The Australians have announced a young squad for their upcoming tour of the United Kingdom. They will play limited-overs games against Scotland and England. This squad includes Fraser-McGurk, who is expected to open alongside Travis Head in white-ball games.
"But, as far as this team goes and the journey to transition to some different players, in his case across all three formats, it's going to be exciting," Bailey added.
Warner's illustrious career spanned all three formats of cricket. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Australian cricket. As new talents like Fraser-McGurk step up, Warner's legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
