Maxwell's Golden Duck In T20 World Cup Clash, Warner Leads Australia's Fightback
Australia faced Oman in their first Group B match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday, June 6. Glenn Maxwell's struggles continued as he was dismissed for a golden duck. The star all-rounder was out on the third ball of the ninth over by pacer Mehran Khan, who also dismissed Travis Head in the third over. Head managed to score 12 runs off 10 balls.
Maxwell's poor form has been a concern since his performance in the IPL 2024 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He scored only 52 runs in 10 matches, averaging 5.77 with a strike rate of 120.93. Despite taking a break during the IPL season, Maxwell's return did not yield better results. He rejoined RCB after Will Jacks' departure ahead of the playoffs but failed to make an impact.

Travis Head, who was the fourth-highest run-scorer in IPL 2024, also experienced a dip in form towards the end of the tournament. Despite scoring a century in the World Cup 2023 final, Head got out for ducks in three of his last four matches, including the IPL final.
Australia had a shaky start, reduced to 50/3 in 8.3 overs. However, David Warner and Marcus Stoinis formed a crucial 102-run partnership off 64 balls to stabilize the innings. Warner scored 56 off 51 balls, while Stoinis remained unbeaten with 67 off 36 balls, hitting two fours and six sixes. Under Mitchell Marsh's captaincy, Australia posted a total of 164/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Tim David was run out on the last ball of the innings, contributing nine runs.
In Australia's opening match, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, and Ashton Agar were benched. Nathan Ellis was included in the playing eleven. Cummins likely rested due to his late arrival in the West Indies after an extensive IPL campaign with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who were finalists.
