Australia Opts To Rest Pat Cummins For T20 World Cup Opener Against Oman

Australia faced Oman in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday, June 6. Notably, Pat Cummins was absent from Australia's playing eleven.

After Oman won the toss and chose to bowl first, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh announced that Pat Cummins, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, and Ashton Agar would be sitting out. Nathan Ellis was included in the lineup alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as specialist pacers. Marcus Stoinis was also named to play as the fourth seamer.

Although no official reason was given for Cummins' exclusion, it is believed that the decision was made to provide him with a prolonged rest following his extensive IPL 2024 campaign with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Cummins led SRH to the final against Rajasthan Royals in Chennai on May 26.

Cummins joined the Australian team late and travelled a significant distance to the West Indies. The management likely chose not to risk him against a relatively weaker opposition like Oman. Additionally, Mitchell Marsh, who could have contributed in the seam department, is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during IPL 2024 and will play as a specialist batter in the initial matches.

Australia's innings faced early setbacks with Travis Head (12), Marsh (14), and Glenn Maxwell (0) getting dismissed quickly, leaving the team struggling at 50/3 in 8.3 overs. David Warner and Marcus Stoinis then formed a partnership to stabilize the innings.
