T20 World Cup 2024: Australia Clinches Super 8 Spot With Victory Over Namibia

Adam Zampa's stellar performance with the ball propelled Australia to a decisive 9-wicket victory over Namibia, securing their Super 8 spot from Group B in the T20 World Cup 2024. The match took place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda on Wednesday, June 12.

Australia's bowling unit, led by Zampa (4 for 12 in 4 overs), restricted Namibia to a mere 72 runs. The chase was completed in just 34 balls, with Travis Head and skipper Mitchell Marsh remaining unbeaten on 34 and 18 respectively. David Warner also contributed with a quickfire 20 off 8 balls. David Wiese was the lone wicket-taker for Namibia.

Australia Secures Super 8 Spot

With this victory, Australia became the first team from Group B to secure a Super 8 spot, having won three consecutive matches. They will face Scotland in their final Group B fixture at Gros Islet on Saturday. Namibia, on the other hand, faced their second loss in three games, eliminating them from the Super 8 race. Scotland and England are now vying for the second Super 8 spot from Group B.

Earlier in the match, Namibia's captain Gerhard Erasmus was the only notable contributor with the bat, scoring 36 off 43 balls. The rest of the Namibian batting lineup struggled against Australia's bowlers. Josh Hazlewood (2/18) and Marcus Stoinis (2/9) took two wickets each, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Ellis chipped in with one wicket apiece.

"I thought it was a great performance from the bowling team. Swing was around and all-round a professional performance. It's really important and great to qualify for the super eights," said Marsh after the win on Tuesday night.

Zampa's exceptional form earned him the player of the match award. Marsh praised the leg-spinner, who has taken eight wickets in three games. "If you look at his career over the last 4-5 years, he is probably our most important player. He loves the pressure and he is bowling well at the moment and we are lucky to have him," Marsh added.

Namibia's skipper Erasmus acknowledged his team's shortcomings against one of the world's best teams. "You can't sit back against the best in the world. The skill gap is there; we tried to close that by fighting fire with fire but we did not do that in this tournament so far," said Erasmus.
