Arshdeep Singh Surpasses Bumrah In T20 World Cup Powerplay Wickets

India vs Ireland: Arshdeep Singh has made a significant mark in Indian cricket by surpassing Jasprit Bumrah's record for the most wickets taken in the powerplay for India in T20 Internationals. This milestone was achieved during the eighth match of the T20 World Cup 2024 league stages, held at Nassau County International Stadium in New York.

In a crucial over, Arshdeep dismissed Ireland openers Paul Stirling (5) and Andrew Balbirnie (2), leaving Ireland struggling at 9/2 in the third over. These early breakthroughs were instrumental in putting India on the front foot, setting the stage for a comprehensive performance by the Indian bowling unit.

Arshdeep Tops Bumrah in T20 Wickets

Ireland found themselves in a difficult position, and by the 11th over, they had slumped to 49/7. The Irish team also posted their lowest powerplay total in a T20 World Cup match, scoring just 26/2 against India. Arshdeep's exceptional bowling spell rattled Ireland's top order and highlighted his growing stature as a key bowler for India.

With this performance, Arshdeep took his powerplay wicket tally to 26, surpassing Jasprit Bumrah's 25. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains the leader in this category with an impressive 47 wickets. Arshdeep's achievement underscores his reliability and effectiveness in the shortest format of the game.

The match also saw Arshdeep create an unceremonious record. In the fifth over of the innings, he bowled the longest over by an Indian in T20 World Cup history, delivering ten balls and conceding 13 runs. This over included four wides, one of which evaded wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and ran away for five wides.

This surpassed the previous record held by Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled a nine-ball over against New Zealand during the 2016 edition. Despite this hiccup, Arshdeep's overall performance was commendable. His initial spell read two overs for five runs with two wickets, effectively dismantling Ireland's top order.

The left-arm pacer's ability to swing the ball both ways and maintain a disciplined line and length has made him a vital part of India's bowling lineup. His achievements in this match further solidify his position as a reliable bowler for India in T20 Internationals.
