Amit Mishra Doubts Shubman Gill's Captaincy, Prefers Ruturaj Gaikwad As Batsman

Amit Mishra has expressed reservations about appointing Shubman Gill as the permanent captain of the Indian cricket team. He was quite clear in stating that Gill seemed clueless in his role as a captain.

During an interview on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube podcast 'Unplugged', Amit Mishra shared his observations from the IPL 2024. He noted that Gill appeared out of place and confused while leading Gujarat Titans.

Mishra Critiques Gill, Praises Gaikwad

"I've seen him (Shubman Gill) in the IPL, and he doesn't know how to do captaincy. He has no idea about captaincy. Why they made him captain is a question. Just because he's in the Indian team doesn't mean he should be made captain," Amit Mishra said.

Mishra also compared Ruturaj Gaikwad to Shubman Gill, calling Gaikwad a more complete and reliable batter. He believes Gaikwad should have been included in India's reserves list for the T20 World Cup 2024.

"Gaikwad is better than Gill as he has scored runs in tough situations. He should have been in the reserves list for the T20 World Cup 2024 as I think he is a complete player capable of playing in all the three formats. He has the technique, and does not take a lot of risk. He is that calmness," Mishra added.

Shubman Gill was appointed as the captain of a young Indian squad for a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Although India lost the first match, they managed to win the next four games under his leadership.

Amit Mishra suggested that selectors named Shubman Gill as India’s captain for the Zimbabwe tour to give him some leadership experience. They wanted to keep him as one of the future captaincy options.

"Just because he is a part of the Indian team, he shouldn't be made the captain. Gill has done well in the IPL over the last few seasons, he did fine in the Indian team as well. The Indian team made him the captain as they wanted to give him leadership experience, which wasn't visible when he led Gujarat Titans in IPL," Mishra stated.
