Afghanistan's Historic T20 World Cup Run: The Coaches Behind The Success
Afghanistan made history on Tuesday, June 25, by securing a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final. They achieved this milestone with an 8-run victory over Bangladesh using the DLS Method in the final Super 8 match of the tournament.
The team, led by Rashid Khan, had already kept their semi-final hopes alive by defeating Australia. They successfully defended a modest total of 114 runs in a rain-affected match at Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.

In the T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan advanced to the Super 8s from a group that included West Indies, New Zealand, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea. Despite a rare loss to the Windies, they comfortably defeated the other three teams.
Head coach - Jonathan Trott: Former England batter Jonathan Trott has been instrumental in Afghanistan's recent successes. Appointed head coach in July 2022, he has overseen significant victories and remarkable comebacks.
Under Trott's guidance, Afghanistan has shown consistent improvement. Starting with their performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 where they defeated England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, Trott has now led them to victories over New Zealand and Australia in the T20 World Cup 2023.
Bowling consultant - Dwayne Bravo: Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo joined as a bowling consultant just before the T20 World Cup 2024. His local knowledge of Caribbean conditions has been invaluable for the team.
Bravo's expertise was evident during crucial moments against Australia and Bangladesh. He provided strategic advice on field placements and bowling tactics from the boundary ropes.
Ajay Jadeja's Role
Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja served as a mentor for Afghanistan during the ODI World Cup 2023. Although he no longer holds any role with the team, his motivational influence was significant during last year's victories.
The Afghan team's success is not only due to their players but also their coaching staff. Alongside Trott and Bravo are South Africa's Andrew Puttick (batting coach), Afghanistan's Hamid Hassan (bowling coach), Australian Shane McDermott (fielding coach), and South African Jason Douglas (strength and conditioning coach).
The Afghans have reached a stage where their victories over top teams are no longer considered upsets. They have consistently outperformed teams expected to beat them in white-ball cricket.
In the Super Eights stage of this tournament, Afghanistan lost their opening game to India but bounced back impressively. They secured wins against Australia and Bangladesh from seemingly impossible positions to continue their fairytale run.
The combination of skilled players and strategic coaching has propelled Afghanistan into new heights in international cricket. Their journey through this tournament showcases their resilience and growing prowess on the global stage.
Their achievements reflect not only individual talent but also effective teamwork and leadership both on and off the field. As they prepare for the semi-finals, they carry forward a legacy of determination and skill that continues to inspire fans worldwide.
