Afghanistan Celebrates Historic Win Over Australia In T20 World Cup 2024

Player of the match Gulbadin Naib described Afghanistan's victory over Australia on Sunday, June 23, in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match as the nation's "biggest achievement in cricket."

Defending a total of 148, all-rounder Naib took four wickets for 20 runs, leading Afghanistan to bowl out Australia for 127. This secured a notable 21-run win at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.

Afghanistan's Historic T20 Win

Naveen-ul-Haq also contributed significantly by claiming three wickets for 20 runs, giving Afghanistan an early advantage. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60 off 49 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran (51 off 48 balls) shared a crucial 118-run partnership, setting a challenging total for Australia.

Glenn Maxwell, who had previously dashed Afghan hopes with a double century in last year's ODI World Cup, seemed poised to repeat his performance. However, Naib halted Maxwell's innings at 59 off 41 balls in the 15th over.

Naib had earlier dismissed Marcus Stoinis and Tim David in quick succession. He later bowled out Pat Cummins, effectively sealing Australia's fate as their lower order collapsed swiftly.

Following the match, Naib expressed his elation, stating that Afghanistan had long awaited this victory over Australia. "We were waiting for a long time. Great moment for me, my nation, my people. Big achievement for our cricket," Naib said during the post-match presentation.

Naib acknowledged the challenging nature of the pitch, which offered considerable bounce. He thanked skipper Rashid Khan for his trust and highlighted the collective effort of the team. "The wicket wasn't easy to bat on; the ball was too bouncy. Thanks to Rashid for trusting me. This was a complete team effort," he added.

Historical Context

Afghanistan had previously come close to defeating Australia in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup but fell short on both occasions. In 2023, Maxwell led Australia from a precarious position of 91 for 7 to chase down a target of 292. In 2022, Rashid Khan's late efforts were not enough as Afghanistan missed a 169-run target by five runs.

A Milestone Achievement

Reflecting on finally overcoming Australia, Naib emphasized the significance of this victory for Afghanistan cricket. He also recalled their earlier triumph over New Zealand in the group stages of this year's tournament. "We beat Australia at last! It is a great achievement for Afghanistan cricket," Naib remarked.

Looking ahead, Naib expressed optimism about Afghanistan's future prospects. "Our journey starts now. We have great management and I'm very fortunate to have this team. Every game is important," he concluded.
