Afghanistan Triumphs Over Australia With Historic 21-Run Win In T20 World Cup

AUS vs AFG: A meme fest erupted as Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs to keep their T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals hope alive on Sunday, June 23.

Afghanistan, who qualified for the Super 8 after beating New Zealand in the group stage, bounced back from their defeat against India to stun mighty Australia and end their unbeaten streak in the ongoing ICC showpiece event.

Afghanistan's Historic Win Over Australia

After being asked to bat first, Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran stitched a century stand to help their team post a challenging 148-run target on a difficult batting surface.

In the second half of the match, Afghanistan bowlers wreaked havoc and bundled out Australia for 127 runs in 19.2 overs. Naveen-ul-Haq clean bowled dangerous Travis Head for a duck and also picked the wicket of captain Mitchell Marsh. Mohammad Nabi chipped in with the wicket of David Warner.

Gulbadin Naib (4/20) soon joined the party and picked the wickets of Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Glenn Maxwell (59) as Australia were left reeling at 106/6. Once Matthew Wade (5) and Pat Cummins (3) were back in the hut, it was all done and dusted for the 2021 champions.

Naveen returned to pick the wicket of Ashton Agar before Azmatullah Omarzai picked the final wicket of Adam Zampa to seal the historic win - Afghanistan's first over Australia.

The defeat also helped Afghanistan avenge their heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023. Chasing 292, Australia were seven down for 91 when Glenn Maxwell scored 201 unbeaten runs to hand his team a three-wicket win.

Quite obviously, the win mattered a lot to Afghanistan and the fans of the Afghanistan cricket team. They celebrated the win like their very own and came up with hilarious memes to kick off the celebrations. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer also joined the bandwagon. Have a look.
