Afghanistan Shocks Australia With A Strategic Win In T20 World Cup 2024
Cricket enthusiasts were left in awe as Afghanistan triumphed over Australia by 21 runs in the Super Eights Group 1 match at Kingstown, St Vincent. This victory keeps Afghanistan's hopes alive for a semi-final spot in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Australia, needing a win to secure their semi-final berth, faced a determined Afghan side. Defending a modest total of 148 on a tricky surface at the Arnos Vale Ground, Afghanistan's bowlers rose to the occasion.

Glenn Maxwell was Australia's standout performer with a valiant 59 off 41 balls. However, his efforts were in vain as Gulbadin Naib (4 for 20) and Naveen-ul-Haq (3 for 20) dismantled the Australian batting lineup, restricting them to 127.
Australia now faces a crucial final Super 8 game against India. Their Net Run Rate (NRR) suffered significantly due to this loss, adding pressure to their upcoming match. Meanwhile, Afghanistan can secure a semi-final spot with a win over Bangladesh.
The result sparked varied reactions from the cricketing world. While some termed it an upset, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer disagreed. "Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. Afg are good enough to beat any team on their day," Jaffer posted on X.
Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. Afg are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good Aus team. A fact that should be celebrated. Congratulations and well played @ACBofficials ???????????????? #AUSvAFG pic.twitter.com/e3Ydxap3kC

Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised Rashid Khan's side, stating they could now challenge any team. "Great win for Afghanistan .. they have a genuine chance now of reaching the final .. They will fancy beating any of the teams in the other group in Trinidad with their bowling attack," Vaughan shared on X.
Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted the strategic use of bowlers in Afghanistan's victory. "Great win for Afghanistan! Used 8 bowlers to defend 148. Shows the benefits of having batters who can roll their arm over," Manjrekar noted on X.
Lisa Sthalekar, former Australian women's cricketer, commended Afghanistan's execution and fielding efforts. "This is another historic victory for the Afghanistan side. They have read the conditions better, but more importantly executed well!! Australia's fielding again has been questionable, 6 opportunities missed whereas on the flip side, AFG have taken some rippers!!!" Sthalekar posted on X.
The cricketing world continues to watch as Afghanistan aims for further success in the T20 World Cup 2024. Their next challenge against Bangladesh will be crucial in determining their semi-final fate.
