Afghan Women Cricketers In Australia Call For ICC Support For Refugee Team
Afghan women cricketers have renewed their plea to the sport's global governing body for assistance in forming a refugee team in Australia. This appeal follows the Afghanistan men's team's impressive performance, reaching the semifinals of the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean last week.
The group initially contacted the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2023 but did not receive the needed backing. They have now reiterated their request, highlighting their desire to represent Afghan women who dream of playing cricket but cannot do so in Afghanistan.

"A profound sadness remains that we, as women, cannot represent our country like the male cricketers," they wrote in a letter to ICC chairman Greg Barclay, according to the Australian Associated Press. The letter urged the ICC to help establish a refugee team in Australia.
Since 2021, over two dozen women linked with the Afghanistan Cricket Board sought refuge in Australia after the Taliban banned women's sports. While many continue to play domestically, they lack international cricket opportunities due to ICC regulations requiring test-playing members to support both men's and women's national teams.
The women stressed that ICC support would enable Afghan refugees to play, coach, and manage a team across borders. "The creation of this team will allow all Afghan women who want to represent their country to come together under one banner," they stated. Their goals include developing talent, giving hope to women in Afghanistan, and highlighting their challenges.
Cricket Australia's Role
Cricket Australia has previously supported Afghan women's players and has refused bilateral series against Afghanistan's men's team until gender disparity is addressed. This stance underscores their commitment to gender equality in cricket.
The Afghan women cricketers' appeal aims not only at playing cricket but also at drawing attention to the broader issues faced by Afghan women. Establishing a refugee team could provide a platform for these talented athletes and inspire others facing similar challenges.
