Abu Dhabi Gears Up For ICC Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier 2024
Abu Dhabi is set to become the focal point of women's cricket as the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub gears up to host the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier 2024. Scheduled between 21 April and 7 May, the event will feature a total of 32 matches, culminating in a grand final at Zayed Cricket Stadium. This prestigious tournament will determine the two teams that will advance to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later in September and October 2024.
Competing in Abu Dhabi will be ten teams from across the globe, including the host nation UAE, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda, US, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe. This marks a return of the tournament to Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub, following the successful hosting of the 2022 qualifier which saw Bangladesh and Ireland securing their spots for the World Cup.
Matt Boucher, CEO of Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub, expressed his enthusiasm about hosting the event again, emphasizing the importance of women's sports development and the inspirational impact of such tournaments. "It is always a privilege to host ICC events and we are thrilled to welcome the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier 2024 back to our venue. The event in 2022 was an undeniable success and the quality of cricket on display was incredible," Boucher stated.
The tournament will feature two groups of five teams each, with double-header games set to take place at both the Zayed Cricket Stadium and Tolerance Oval. This format ensures a thrilling cricket spectacle for fans and provides ample opportunities for the teams to showcase their talents on an international stage.
The announcement of the Global Qualifier follows the launch of two new tournaments by Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub. The inaugural Abu Dhabi Women's T20 and Abu Dhabi Counties Super Cup were significant additions to the cricket calendar, bringing teams from the UK to the UAE capital. The Women's T20 saw The Blaze triumph over the South East Stars, while Yorkshire claimed victory against Nottinghamshire in the Abu Dhabi Counties Super Cup.
These events not only provided high-level competition but also offered local talent the chance to compete against some of the best players in country cricket. Moreover, plans are in place to include the UAE National team in future editions of the women's tournament, further highlighting the commitment to developing cricket in the region. Both tournaments were broadcast globally, reaching an international audience and showcasing Abu Dhabi's growing stature in the world of cricket.
As the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier 2024 approaches, Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub, along with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, is ready to deliver another captivating tournament. Their dedication to the promotion of women's sports and the development of cricket in the UAE continues to strengthen, promising an exciting future for the sport in the region.
