Abhishek Sharma's Disappointing Debut: Joins Unwanted Duck Record
Abhishek Sharma's debut for India in the first T20I against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club was one to forget. The opener was dismissed for a 4-ball duck on Saturday, July 6.
Sharma, known for his aggressive batting in the powerplay, had a disappointing start to his international career. He was dismissed in the very first over of the match.

The 23-year-old earned his spot in the senior team after an impressive IPL 2024 season. However, he was sent back to the pavilion after attempting to attack spinner Brian Bennet and getting caught by Wellington Masakadza at deep mid-wicket.
Chasing a modest target of 116, Sharma opened with Punjab teammate and captain Shubman Gill. Unfortunately, his innings lasted just four balls, placing him alongside MS Dhoni, KL Rahul, and Prithvi Shaw on an unwanted list of Indian players who scored ducks on their T20I debuts.
Abhishek Sharma was not alone in making his debut; Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel also earned their first international caps. Parag's debut was similarly disappointing as he scored only 2 runs off 3 balls. India found themselves struggling at 22/3 within 4.4 overs after Ruturaj Gaikwad fell for just 7 runs.
Rinku Singh, another player many believed should have been part of the recent T20 World Cup-winning squad, failed to impress as well. He departed for a 2-ball duck, leaving India at a precarious position of 28/4 by the end of seven overs with Gill and Jurel at the crease.
Earlier in the match, Ravi Bishnoi (4 for 13) and Washington Sundar (2 for 11) delivered exceptional bowling performances. They restricted Zimbabwe to a total of 115/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan also contributed with one wicket each.
The match saw three Indian players making their debuts but none could make a significant impact with the bat. Despite these setbacks, India's bowlers ensured they had a manageable target to chase.
The game highlighted both promising talent and areas needing improvement as India continues to build its team for future challenges.
