Abhishek Sharma Excluded From India's T20I Squad Despite Century

In an unexpected move, Punjab allrounder Abhishek Sharma has been left out as the BCCI announced India's 15-member squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka on Thursday, July 18.

Despite his impressive performance in Zimbabwe, where he scored a remarkable 47-ball century in just his second T20I, Sharma's name is missing from the squad. His journey in Zimbabwe was eventful. After a disappointing debut with a duck, he bounced back strongly, hitting the Zimbabwe bowlers all over the field. His 100-run innings included seven fours and eight sixes, highlighting his explosive potential at the top of the order.

However, Yashasvi Jaiswal reclaimed his spot as opener from the third match onwards, pushing Sharma to number three. In this position, he managed scores of 10 and 14 in subsequent games. He concluded the series with a total of 124 runs at an average of 31.00 and an impressive strike rate of 174.64.

The return of experienced players like Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammad Siraj has reshuffled the team dynamics, leaving Sharma out for now. The selectors chose to retain Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson while bringing back Rishabh Pant after his rest period. With Shubman Gill and Jaiswal established as openers, Sharma's potential role as a backup was overlooked.

Sharma's exclusion is particularly surprising given his standout IPL 2024 season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. He finished as the 10th-highest run-scorer with 484 runs in 16 innings at an astonishing strike rate of 204.21. His dynamic performances had raised expectations for a more permanent role in the national squad.

This decision leaves many fans puzzled about Sharma's future prospects in international cricket despite his recent achievements.
