Zayed International Airport Earns Prestigious 3 Pearl Estidama Rating For Sustainable Construction Practices

Zayed International Airport (AUH) has achieved a notable milestone by securing the 3 Pearl Estidama rating for construction. This recognition places it among the largest buildings in the UAE to receive such an honour. The award highlights Abu Dhabi Airports' dedication to sustainable development and reflects the airport's leadership in eco-friendly infrastructure.

The transition from a 3 Pearl design-stage rating to construction stage certification underscores Zayed International Airport's alignment with the UAE's sustainability goals. The airport has focused on reducing environmental impact, conserving resources, and ensuring a healthy internal environment. This commitment is evident in its use of responsibly sourced materials, with over 90 percent of steel and 80 percent of timber coming from certified sustainable sources.

Emphasising circular economy principles, the airport recycles more than 90 percent of its steel and diverts 86 percent of construction waste from landfills. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to minimise environmental impact while fostering sustainability. Water-efficient fixtures at the airport surpass Estidama benchmarks by 45 percent, showcasing its commitment to resource conservation.

The rating also reflects our dedication to providing world-class airport services that prioritise both efficiency and environmental responsibility."

The airport has set ambitious targets as part of its recently launched Sustainability Strategy. By 2030, it aims to reduce energy and potable water consumption by 30 percent, source 5 percent of energy from renewable resources, divert 40 percent of waste from landfills, and achieve a 10 percent reduction in overall waste volumes.

In November 2024, reverse vending machines (RVMs) were installed throughout the airport. These machines encourage passengers to recycle plastic bottles and aluminium cans. This initiative is part of Zayed International Airport's ongoing commitment to sustainable practices that contribute to a more environmentally friendly future for the region.
