WTO Conference In Abu Dhabi To Delve Into Global Supply Chain Decentralisation

The World Trade Organisation's (WTO) Ministerial Conference (MC13), set to take place in Abu Dhabi, is poised to address the critical theme of decentralising global supply chains to foster inclusive global trade. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala underscored the significance of diversifying investment in developing countries to reconfigure supply chains and boost employment opportunities. With an emphasis on the potential beyond China for such investments, the conference aims to broaden the horizons for global trade.

The UAE's role as the host for MC13 was lauded by Okonjo-Iweala, who viewed it as a reflection of the nation's dedication to multilateralism and global unity. The agenda for the conference is comprehensive, covering deliberations on trade in relation to environmental sustainability, climate change, and inclusivity. These discussions are geared towards integrating marginalized groups and developing nations into the global trading system, with a particular focus on women and micro, medium, and small enterprises (MSMEs).

One of the highlights of MC13 will be the celebration of Timor-Leste and Comoros joining the WTO, marking an end to an eight-year period without new members. This expansion underscores the ongoing relevance and appeal of the WTO, with 22 countries currently awaiting membership. Additionally, the conference will tackle the imperative issue of dispute settlement reforms, aiming for a fully operational system by 2024 that is more accessible to developing nations.

Digital trade is another key topic on the agenda, with discussions expected on extending a moratorium on customs duties for electronic transactions and advancing an e-commerce agreement among member states. The WTO is also launching a $50 million fund dedicated to enhancing women's participation in digital trade. Furthermore, an initiative to assist West African countries in developing their cotton processing capabilities will be introduced, aiming to strengthen their global market position.

Continuing negotiations on fisheries subsidies represent another critical area of focus, with the goal of curbing practices that lead to overfishing and excessive fishing capacity. Through these discussions, MC13 seeks to address various facets of global trade, emphasizing decentralization, inclusivity, sustainability, and resilience.

Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism regarding the potential outcomes of MC13 and its impact on global trade dynamics and development. The conference represents a pivotal moment for addressing contemporary challenges in global trade and setting a course towards a more inclusive and resilient trading system.
