World Water Day: UAE's Push For Sustainable Water Management And Security

On the occasion of World Water Day, Ahmed Al Kaabi, Assistant Undersecretary for Electricity, Water, and Future Energy Sector at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), underscored the significance of sustainable water management. This year's theme, 'Water for Peace,' sheds light on the crucial role water plays in fostering global peace and stability. Al Kaabi remarked on the essential nature of water for human survival and its pivotal contribution to sustainable growth, especially in the UAE's arid environment where water is a top national priority.

Al Kaabi further elaborated on the UAE's reliance on non-traditional water sources, which account for 53% of its fresh water supply. This includes water obtained from seawater desalination and the reuse of treated wastewater. He proudly noted the United Nations report on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agenda, which shows the UAE achieving 100% in safe drinking water and sanitation services, alongside a commendable 79% in integrated water resources management.

UAE Focuses on Water Sustainability

The Assistant Undersecretary also highlighted the UAE's ambition to enhance these results through strategic alignment between its water, energy, environment, and food strategies. The National Energy and Water Demand Management Program 2050 aims to reduce consumption, support renewable energy innovation, and improve the efficiency and environmental performance of power and water plants.

In a bid to bolster global water security, the UAE has initiated the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition through the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative. This five-year global challenge seeks to inspire innovation in making water desalination technologies more reliable, affordable, and sustainable. The competition is set to impact billions worldwide by ensuring access to clean water.

Additionally, in collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), the Ministry has unveiled the first hydrogeological map and geo-database of the UAE. This landmark project aims at meticulously documenting and managing water sources to ensure their sustainability and conservation.

Al Kaabi also pointed out that the UAE boasts 140 wastewater treatment plants, including those operated by private entities. With a total design capacity of 3 million m3/day, these facilities produced 768 million m3/year of treated wastewater. Remarkably, about 73% of this treated water is reused for irrigating green spaces across urban areas.

The efforts and achievements outlined by Al Kaabi reflect the UAE's commitment to addressing its unique water challenges through innovative solutions and international cooperation. By focusing on sustainable management and technological advancements in water treatment, the country not only aims to meet its own needs but also contributes significantly to global water security.
