Global Partnership Launched To Support Clean Energy Transition Worldwide

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE, in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), recently hosted a workshop in Abu Dhabi. This event aimed to address global climate challenges and green energy needs by fostering international cooperation.

Experts from around the globe gathered to discuss forming a global partnership for sharing information and services in weather, water, and climate domains. The goal is to advance clean energy transition, integrate meteorological services into the renewable energy sector, and support ambitious global goals set by COP28.

Partnership Boosts Clean Energy Shift

The WMO plays a crucial role in promoting clean energy transition by providing advanced meteorological, hydrological, and climate information. The workshop was a significant step towards identifying the needs and objectives of this global partnership. Participants included experts from various fields such as energy supply chains, environmentally friendly energy systems, and climate science.

This initiative aligns with COP28's goal of tripling renewable power and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. These targets are part of the broader 2015 Paris Agreement goals aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Achieving net zero by 2050 necessitates a massive shift to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and marine energy.

The workshop identified four main themes essential for implementing the global partnership. These include scientific studies and innovation in renewable energy to enhance understanding and forecasting of energy production. Effective resource management is also a priority.

Another focus is on providing integrated and accurate operational services. This involves developing climate maps, signals, and energy production forecasts to ensure informed decisions based on reliable data. Additionally, building capacities through training and workshops is crucial for effectively applying climate data to support clean energy transition.

Transforming Information into Actionable Insights

The partnership aims to convert technical meteorological information into actionable insights for decision-makers. Strengthening partnerships to formulate policies that support the renewable energy sector with a robust structural framework is also a key objective.

This multidisciplinary partnership includes meteorological and hydrological services to provide actionable information. The goal is to help countries achieve their climate goals in line with the Paris Agreement, leading to a clean, resilient, balanced, and low-cost energy system.

Professor Alberto Troccoli's Remarks

Professor Alberto Troccoli, Managing Director of the World Energy and Meteorology Council and Chair of the WMO Study Group on Renewable Energy Transition said: "I am pleased to announce the success of the workshop on the Global Partnership for Weather, Water and Climate Information and Services for Clean Energy, which has identified the pivotal role of the Partnership. The outcomes include plans to produce accurate renewable energy maps, standardize monitoring data, and enhance collaboration between meteorological and hydrological services and energy organizations to drive the clean energy transition in line with the Paris Agreement."

Addressing Key Functions

The Partnership will address several key functions including integrating data, products, technologies, and energy partners to create a global platform supporting WMO members. There will be a focus on developing countries.

Innovation in weather monitoring and forecasting is critical for renewable energy operations. This includes resource assessment based on historical data, extreme weather monitoring, climate change simulations, and scenarios.

Promoting Dialogue Between Sectors

The project also focuses on understanding renewable energy requirements by identifying user needs effectively. It promotes dialogue between meteorological communities and the energy sector through conferences and training courses across different industries.

Additionally, it provides recommendations on policies related to energy transition along with international plans offering advice to support this shift towards renewable sources.

Founding Phase Focus

During its founding phase, emphasis will be placed on providing valuable products that support global renewable development. Multidisciplinary technologies will ensure work remains innovative while fostering collaboration aimed at creating a sustainable future aligned with global commitments supporting clean renewable transitions.
