World Green Economy Summit To Prioritise Climate Justice And Empower Vulnerable Communities

The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) has declared that achieving climate justice and empowering impoverished communities are its primary goals. The summit, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is a key platform for dialogue, exploring solutions, and making decisions to support global efforts in combating climate change and empowering vulnerable communities.

The 10th WGES is scheduled for October 2-3, 2024, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. This year's theme is "Empowering Global Action: Unlocking Opportunities and Advancing Progress". The event is organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, DEWA, and the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO).

Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), stated in a press release on Tuesday that WGES aims to empower developing regions. He emphasised fostering global cooperation and encouraging public-private partnerships to address climate change. "The summit will focus on advancing green policies, promoting cutting-edge technologies, and facilitating the transition to a green economy," he said.

This year’s thematic pillars include decarbonisation, clean energy advancements such as green hydrogen and energy storage, climate finance, circular economy practices, using technology to tackle climate change, youth involvement in climate initiatives, and food and water security. These themes aim to address various aspects of the green energy transition while considering risks and challenges associated with energy supply.

Al Tayer highlighted that the summit would also focus on promoting innovative technologies. "We aim to facilitate the transition to a green economy while addressing the risks associated with energy supply," he added. The summit seeks to advance green policies that support sustainable development globally.
