WETEX 2024 Advances UAE Consensus To Enhance Global Climate Action And Renewable Energy Capacity

The Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2024 aligns with the COP28 Pledge to significantly boost global renewable energy capacity and the UAE Consensus to enhance energy efficiency worldwide. This event brings together numerous local and international companies focused on sustainability and clean energy. It also promotes climate financing and investment in clean energy systems.

WETEX highlights advancements related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and disruptive technologies, emphasising energy security, sustainability, and emissions reduction. The exhibition supports the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 by playing a crucial role in multilateral efforts to achieve global climate goals.

WETEX 2024 Promotes UAE Climate Action Goals

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA and Founder and Chairman of WETEX, stated that WETEX is pivotal in supporting the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. He said, "WETEX supports the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 to triple the contribution of renewable energy by 2030. It highlights the UAE’s essential role in bringing about positive change in development and vital sectors."

Al Tayer also mentioned that WETEX is instrumental in showcasing the UAE's success in proving the importance of multilateral action for achieving global climate aspirations. As one of the largest specialised exhibitions globally, it facilitates collaboration among decision-makers on critical issues like energy, water, and sustainability.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President, and Chairman of Masdar, highlighted the significance of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030. He remarked that this goal is vital for maintaining the 1.5°C target and advancing sustainable prosperity for all.

He added that since delivering the UAE Consensus in Dubai last year, it has become a defining framework for global climate ambition. Dr. Al Jaber noted that WETEX will once again position the UAE at the forefront of positive climate action.

Youth Involvement in Climate Action

Beniamin Strzelecki from the UN Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change emphasised three key priorities for global climate action over the next six months. These include securing ambitious climate finance goals at COP29 and ensuring countries follow up on COP28 outcomes by endorsing targets on energy storage and grid expansion.

Strzelecki stressed that young people will play a crucial role in advocating for a liveable future as every fraction of a degree matters in global warming.

A Holistic Approach to Energy Transition

Gauri Singh, Deputy Director-General of IRENA, discussed how transitioning to renewable energy requires an economy-wide effort involving multiple sectors. Singh stated that policies supporting renewable energy must be part of a broader framework extending beyond just the energy sector.

This comprehensive approach is necessary to drive structural changes ensuring not only successful transitions but also promoting equitable outcomes across different sectors.

The 26th edition of WETEX took place from 1st to 3rd October 2024 at Dubai World Trade Centre under directives from H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and patronage from H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
