United Nations Calls For Immediate Release Of Detained UN Personnel In Yemen Amid Ongoing Violations
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has criticised the detention of at least 11 UN staff by the Houthis in Yemen on 31st August. This occurred in areas they control. Guterres also condemned the forced entry into World Food Programme premises, seizure of UN property, and attempts to access other UN facilities in Sana’a.
The Secretary-General's statement on Sunday called for the immediate release of all detained personnel. This includes those from the United Nations, international and national NGOs, civil society, and diplomatic missions held since June 2024, as well as those detained in 2021 and 2023. He emphasised that targeting or detaining UN staff during their duties is unacceptable.

Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, strongly condemned these arbitrary detentions in Sana’a and Al Hudaydah. He highlighted that at least 11 UN staff were detained, adding to 23 others already held since 2021 and 2023. One colleague tragically died in custody earlier this year.
Grundberg noted that despite ongoing efforts over the past year to secure assurances, arbitrary detentions of UN staff, NGO workers, and civil society representatives continue. These actions severely hinder broader efforts to provide assistance and promote peace in Yemen.
The United Nations remains committed to securing the release of all arbitrarily detained individuals. It continues its efforts alongside partners to support Yemen's pursuit of a just and lasting peace. The safety and security of UN personnel and property must be ensured at all times.
Grundberg reiterated his demand for the immediate release of all detained UN personnel, as well as staff from national and international NGOs, civil society organisations, and diplomatic missions. He expressed solidarity with detained colleagues and their families.
Principles of Neutrality
Grundberg stressed that UN personnel work under principles of neutrality, impartiality, independence, and humanity. These arrests violate obligations to respect their safety and dignity while carrying out essential work. Securing their release remains a priority for him and the entire UN system.
The Secretary-General underlined the need to ensure the inviolability of UN premises at all times. He emphasised that UN personnel should never be targeted or detained while performing their duties.
