UN Special Rapporteur Reem Al Salem Commends UAE For Significant Progress On Women's Rights

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been commended for its advancements in gender equality and women's protection by Reem Al Salem, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls. During the 59th Session of the Human Rights Council, she acknowledged the UAE's political commitment to these causes and its efforts to empower women in various sectors.

Al Salem noted that the UAE has made significant progress in women's political and economic participation. She attributed this to a strong political will and a vision that appreciates women's societal contributions. "The UAE has made tremendous strides, particularly in women’s political and economic participation, which is a direct result of political will and a vision that values women’s contribution to society," said Al Salem.

UAE's Progress on Women's Rights Praised

The UAE's dedication to gender parity is evident through initiatives like equal representation in the Federal National Council and increased leadership roles for women. Substantial legal reforms further highlight the country's commitment to empowering women. Al Salem praised these efforts as vital steps towards ensuring safety and equality for all women and girls.

Jamal Jama Al Musharakh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, welcomed Al Salem's remarks. He stated: "This successful visit signifies the UAE’s ongoing commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls both domestically and internationally." He emphasized that empowering women is crucial for building inclusive communities.

The UAE continues to invest significantly in protecting women and children, especially in crisis settings. These proactive measures reflect a dedication to creating an environment where women can fully contribute to national development. Al Salem highlighted these investments as essential for shaping a future where women's rights are safeguarded.

Ambassador Al Musharakh stressed that while progress has been made, there is more work ahead. "The UAE remains dedicated to working closely with the United Nations and will continue to act on the Special Rapporteur’s recommendations as we pursue further progress in ensuring the rights of women and girls are fully realized and protected," he said.

International Collaboration

During her visit in December 2024, Al Salem engaged with various stakeholders in the UAE. The country organized field visits and meetings with government officials, civil society representatives, and other organizations. This collaboration underscores the UAE's commitment to advancing women's rights both domestically and globally.

The UAE's efforts demonstrate a robust approach towards gender equality, reflecting its belief in women's full participation as fundamental to societal prosperity. The nation remains committed to implementing recommendations from international bodies like the UN to further enhance women's rights.
