UN Chief António Guterres Rejects Forced Displacement Of Gaza Residents And Calls For Ceasefire
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has voiced serious concerns about Israel's plans to expand ground operations in Gaza. He emphasised the UN's opposition to any humanitarian aid mechanisms that do not adhere to international law and core humanitarian principles such as humanity, impartiality, independence, and neutrality.
Guterres addressed the Arab Summit in Baghdad, where he firmly opposed any attempts at displacing Gaza's population or forcibly moving them outside Gaza. He called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian aid access. He also urged an end to the blockade.

In Lebanon, Guterres stressed the importance of respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He urged the Lebanese government to assert full control over its national territory. He welcomed commitments by Lebanese officials to ensure that arms remain under state control and encouraged continued progress on reforms. The deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces to the south with UNIFIL's assistance was also supported.
Turning attention to Syria, Guterres reiterated the need to uphold Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. He called for robust support for a comprehensive Syrian-led political process based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254. This process aims to safeguard rights and representation for all Syrians regardless of ethnic or religious background.
On Yemen, Guterres highlighted the severe impact of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea on regional and global economies. He stressed the urgent need to stop this cycle of violence. Meanwhile, regarding Sudan, he underscored the necessity for renewed multilateral cooperation to end violence, famine, and mass displacement across the country.
In Libya, Guterres noted ongoing UN engagement with national and international actors to protect key oversight institutions' independence. Efforts are being made to remove obstacles to national elections and chart a course toward long-term stability aligned with Libyan people's needs.
Commitment to Peaceful Solutions
The Secretary-General also commended Iraq for strengthening its institutions and resolving disputes through dialogue. Progress in humanitarian assistance, sustainable development, and human rights was acknowledged. The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq remains committed to concluding its mandate successfully with a planned withdrawal later this year.
Guterres concluded by highlighting Somalia's need for unity through inclusive national dialogue. He emphasised that a two-state solution is essential for sustainable peace between Israel and Palestine. A high-level conference on this solution is scheduled for June.
The Secretary-General's remarks reflect a commitment to addressing complex regional issues through diplomacy and cooperation while upholding international law principles.
