UN Calls For Ceasefire In Gaza To Facilitate Polio Vaccination For Children

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have urged for a seven-day humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. This pause aims to facilitate two rounds of a polio vaccination campaign targeting over 640,000 children under ten years old.

According to WHO, these vaccination rounds are scheduled for late August and September 2024. The goal is to prevent the spread of circulating variant type 2 poliovirus (cVDPV2). These humanitarian pauses will allow children and families safe access to health facilities and enable community outreach workers to reach those who cannot travel.

During each round, the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and other partners, will administer two drops of a novel oral polio vaccine. Over 1.6 million doses of nOPV2, designed to stop cVDPV2 transmission, will be delivered to Gaza.

Ceasefire in Gaza for Polio Shots

The vaccines and cold chain equipment are expected to transit through Ben Gurion Airport before reaching Gaza by late August. Ensuring smooth transport at every step is crucial for timely reception, clearance, and delivery in time for the campaign.

WHO emphasised that at least 95 per cent vaccination coverage during each round is essential to prevent polio spread and reduce re-emergence risks. This is particularly important given the severely disrupted health, water, and sanitation systems in Gaza.

Other critical requirements for successful campaign delivery include sufficient cash flow, fuel supplies, and functional telecommunication networks. These elements are necessary to reach communities with information about the campaign effectively.

"These humanitarian pauses will allow children and families to safely access health facilities," stated WHO. "Community outreach workers can also reach children who cannot travel."

The collaborative effort between MoH, WHO, UNICEF, UNRWA, and partners highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing public health crises. The success of this campaign depends on coordinated efforts across various sectors.

This initiative underscores the need for uninterrupted access to essential services during conflicts. By ensuring high vaccination coverage, the risk of polio re-emergence can be significantly reduced.

The call for a humanitarian ceasefire reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding children's health amid ongoing challenges. It also highlights the critical role of global organisations in supporting vulnerable populations.

Efforts like these demonstrate how targeted interventions can make a significant difference in public health outcomes. The focus remains on achieving high vaccination rates despite logistical challenges.

This campaign represents a vital step towards eradicating polio in regions affected by conflict. Ensuring that all children receive vaccinations is crucial for long-term public health stability.
