UAEREP's Webinar Discusses Sustainable Cloud Seeding Technologies Using Natural Alternatives

The UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) recently conducted the 12th session of its Rain Enhancement Hub Webinar Series. The focus was on "Design and Testing of Natural Substance Flare Packaging for Cold Cloud Seeding." Siripen Somruen, a scientist from Thailand's Royal Rainmaking Technology Research and Development Division, led the session. Her research explores natural alternatives to silver iodide for glaciogenic seeding, aiming to use eco-friendly substances with strong ice-forming capabilities.

Somruen's work involves packaging these natural substances in specially designed flares to test their effectiveness in cold cloud seeding. The objective is to develop sustainable materials and methods for weather modification. This approach aligns with global efforts to find environmentally responsible solutions for enhancing precipitation. By focusing on natural alternatives, the research aims to reduce environmental impact while maintaining effectiveness.

Sustainable Cloud Seeding Technologies Discussed

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), highlighted the significance of rain enhancement technologies. He stated, "Rain enhancement presents a promising opportunity to diversify our water resources and reduce dependence on traditional supplies." This initiative is crucial as existing water reserves face increasing pressure.

Alya Al Mazroui, Director of UAEREP, expressed gratitude for Somruen's insights, emphasizing the importance of environmental considerations in cloud seeding. She noted that the webinar series underscores UAEREP's commitment to facilitating knowledge exchange that deepens scientific understanding and promotes practical applications in this field. The goal is to ensure cloud seeding technologies remain effective and environmentally responsible.

UAEREP supports innovative research projects aimed at developing new technologies for precipitation enhancement. Among its achievements is the work led by Prof. Linda Zou, a UAEREP First Cycle awardee and Adjunct Professor at Victoria University in Australia. Her research uses nanotechnology to create novel cloud seeding materials, positioning the UAE as a leader in using nanotechnology-based core-shell NaCl-TiO2 (CNST) materials in operational cloud seeding.

The UAEREP Rain Enhancement Hub Webinar Series serves as a global platform for collaboration and scientific advancement in weather modification and water security.
