UAE Ascends To Vice Chair Position In UNESCO Cultural Diversity Committee

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has recently been honored with the position of Vice Chair at the UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, set to hold this prestigious role until 2025. This significant appointment is a recognition of the UAE's substantial efforts and contributions towards enhancing cultural diversity and fostering a multicultural environment both within its borders and on the international stage.

The decision was made during the 17th meeting of the committee, hosted at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, France. The UAE’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO put forward the country's nomination for this role, highlighting its rich experience under the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Notably, the UAE Permanent Delegation had previously served as the Rapporteur of the Committee in 2023, showcasing its ongoing commitment and active participation in UNESCO’s initiatives.

UAE's New Role in UNESCO Diversity Committee

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Culture and Chairperson of the National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, expressed his views on this achievement. He remarked that the UAE's election as Vice Chair is a clear indication of the nation's unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting cultural diversity. He emphasized that the UAE is home to over 200 nationalities living in harmony, underpinned by laws that promote dialogue, communication, and tolerance.

Sheikh Salem further elaborated on how this societal harmony has been achieved through the visionary leadership of the UAE, which has put in place robust frameworks and legislation to support diversity. According to him, these efforts have positioned diversity as a fundamental pillar for social progress and development in the country.

This appointment not only underscores the UAE's role as a key player in promoting cultural diversity globally but also highlights its successful model of multiculturalism and social cohesion. It reflects how through fostering an environment of tolerance and open dialogue, nations can achieve remarkable social harmony and development.
