UAE And United States Strengthen Historic Ties To Propel Future Partnership Across Key Sectors

The visit of President Donald Trump to the United Arab Emirates marks a significant milestone in nearly 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This visit aims to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, supporting both nations' goals for development and shared prosperity. The UAE is the United States' leading trading partner in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the Ministry of Economy.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described Trump's visit as a "historic return to the Middle East." Analysts see his choice of the Gulf as his first stop as reaffirming the region's importance in numerous areas. Diplomatic ties were established soon after the UAE's formation in 1971, with embassies opening in Washington and Abu Dhabi in 1974.

The economic relationship between the UAE and the US is strong, with non-oil foreign trade reaching $32.8 billion in 2024. The US ranks as the UAE’s sixth-largest global trade partner and its top partner outside Asia, making up 4% of its non-oil trade that year. The UAE also invests heavily in the US, with investments estimated at $1 trillion across various sectors.

These investments cover areas such as trade, aviation, manufacturing, energy, advanced technology, and artificial intelligence. This robust economic partnership has laid a foundation for long-term collaboration and innovative ventures in emerging fields like AI, food security, clean energy, space exploration, science, education, and culture.

The collaboration between the UAE and US in artificial intelligence has been noteworthy. In 2024 alone, several agreements were signed to boost technology and AI partnerships. In April 2024, G42 from the UAE secured a $1.5 billion investment from Microsoft. By June 2024, World Wide Technology partnered with NXT-Global to create an AI integration centre in Masdar City.

In September 2024, both nations announced a framework to promote AI cooperation. Earlier this year, G42 and Microsoft launched the "Responsible AI Foundation," aimed at promoting responsible AI standards across the Middle East and Global South. March saw further agreements involving BlackRock and other partners to raise capital for AI infrastructure investment.

Space Sector

The UAE's launch of the 'Hope Probe' in 2021 enhanced scientific cooperation with the US in space exploration. This includes a mission to the asteroid belt with Colorado Boulder University. Additionally, the UAE contributes significantly to NASA’s Lunar Gateway project by developing an airlock module for crew safety.

This module is crucial for astronaut safety during missions and is set for launch by 2030. The UAE also plans to send its first astronaut into lunar orbit as part of these collaborative efforts with NASA.

The enduring partnership between these two nations continues to evolve through strategic initiatives across various sectors. These collaborations not only enhance bilateral relations but also contribute significantly to global advancements in technology and science.
