UAE Ranks First In Arab World For TIMSS 2023 Student Performance In Mathematics And Science
The UAE has achieved the top position among Arab nations in the TIMSS 2023 International Report, which evaluates student progress in science and mathematics for grades four and eight. This study, conducted every four years, saw participation from over 64 countries globally. The report's launch occurred on 4 December at Dubai's Museum of the Future, highlighting significant educational insights.
Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri, Minister of Education, praised UAE students for their exceptional performance in the TIMSS study. She noted that these results demonstrate the ministry's efforts to enhance the country's standing in international assessments. The minister stressed the importance of such studies as they help monitor educational development worldwide and guide strategic progress.

Compared to TIMSS 2019, UAE students showed remarkable improvement in 2023. Fourth-grade students increased their mathematics scores by 17 points and science scores by 22 points. Eighth-grade students also improved, with a rise of 15 points in mathematics and 14 points in science. These gains reflect substantial progress in education.
The event featured opening remarks by Dr. Thierry Rocher, setting an optimistic tone. Professor Matthias von Davier presented highlights from the report, while Dr. Dirk Hastedt shared key insights for policy and practice. The event was hosted with IEA and other educational bodies, showcasing new data relevant to educational policies.
Globally, many fourth- and eighth-grade students met at least low international benchmarks in mathematics and science knowledge in 2023. However, short-term trends revealed greater achievement differences between boys and girls compared to TIMSS 2019, especially in fourth-grade mathematics.
The TIMSS report also highlighted a strong link between home resources and student achievement in mathematics and science for both grades internationally. This underscores the influence of home environments on educational outcomes across different countries.
Role of International Assessments
TIMSS and PIRLS are crucial international assessments that track trends in student achievement across mathematics, science, and reading. The IEA is a global cooperative involving national research institutions, government agencies, scholars, and analysts dedicated to researching and improving education worldwide.
The TIMSS 2023 results underscore the UAE's commitment to enhancing its education system through strategic initiatives. By focusing on improving student performance in global assessments like TIMSS, the UAE aims to strengthen its educational framework further.
