UAE Highlights Commitment To Sustainable Tourism Initiatives At Davos 2025 Forum
At the Davos 2025 Forum, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE's Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Emirates Tourism Council, discussed the nation's commitment to sustainability in tourism. He highlighted initiatives aimed at balancing economic growth with environmental preservation, positioning the UAE as a leader in sustainable tourism.
The panel discussion titled "Charting the Course: Sustainable Tourism towards Flexible Economies" brought together leaders from government and private sectors. The focus was on how sustainable tourism can support economic development and enhance local economies' adaptability. Al Marri shared insights into the UAE's innovative sustainability strategies within tourism.

The 'UAE Tourism Strategy 2031', launched in late 2022, is a key initiative enhancing the country's global tourism position. This strategy aims to increase the sector's GDP contribution to AED450 billion by the next decade, aligning with international best practices for growth and development.
Al Marri also highlighted the 'World's Coolest Winter' campaign, now in its fifth edition under the theme 'Green Tourism'. This campaign promotes sustainable domestic tourism while attracting international visitors by showcasing the UAE's ecological and cultural diversity across its seven emirates.
The UAE is actively working on sustainability in air transport through a national roadmap to reduce carbon emissions. By 2030, it plans to produce around 700 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel annually. This initiative supports global sustainability efforts in aviation and related sectors like hospitality and logistics.
In 2024, UAE airspace recorded over one million air movements, solidifying its status as a global air transport hub. The country's airports serve more than 140 million passengers yearly, with hotels accommodating about 30 million guests in 2024.
Global Collaborations and Events
The UAE is set to host significant events like the 'Fourth Global Implementation Support Symposium' (GISS 2025) in Abu Dhabi next month. This platform aims to coordinate international efforts under ICAO for safety, security, and sustainability in aviation.
A strategic partnership with the UN World Tourism Organisation has been established to implement the Statistical Framework for Measuring Sustainability of Tourism (MST). This collaboration focuses on collecting and analysing tourist data more accurately.
Focus on Sustainable Development Goals
The session explored various topics crucial for enhancing tourism sector sustainability. It emphasised managing destinations sustainably to protect environments and support local economies. Collaboration between public and private sectors was encouraged to develop strategies aligning with sustainable development goals.
The UAE continues hosting major initiatives to strengthen leadership in sustainable aviation. These efforts reflect its dedication to advancing sustainability across multiple sectors while maintaining economic growth.
