UAE Becomes Strategic International Partner In Food Security, FAO Confirms

The Food and Agriculture Organisation views the UAE as a key international partner for food security. According to Abdulhakim Elwaer, the UAE supports efforts to stabilise food systems in the Near East, North Africa and worldwide. This role aligns with national policies and wider multilateral initiatives that target long-term resilience.

Elwaer explained that cooperation between FAO and the UAE combines technical, institutional and financial contributions. Joint work focuses on building skills, sharing knowledge and shaping regulatory frameworks. These elements are designed to create lasting benefits for food systems over medium and longer timeframes, rather than short projects.

The UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051 is a central part of this cooperation. Elwaer said the strategy aims to support sustainable local production and improve supply chains. It also targets reduced food loss and waste, and stronger readiness for future disruptions. Together, these measures are intended to secure stable food supplies.

Beyond domestic policies, Elwaer stressed that the UAE acts at regional and global levels. The UAE supports dialogue on transforming food systems and hosts specialist international platforms. Global Food Week 2025 in Abu Dhabi is one example. Such events are meant to promote shared solutions based on partnerships and the exchange of knowledge.

This combined national and international approach helps position the UAE as a dependable partner for food system stability. Elwaer noted that this is especially relevant for areas most exposed to shocks and crises. The UAE’s engagement supports coordinated responses that seek to limit risks to vulnerable communities and markets.

Elwaer also highlighted ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. Both sides are organising a regional dialogue on food safety in Dubai. The initiative supports deeper expertise exchange and more advanced regulatory systems. These systems are aligned with international standards and are expected to improve food safety oversight.

Taken together, the strategy, regional initiatives and FAO partnership show how the UAE links domestic planning with international cooperation. Elwaer’s comments indicate that this approach is helping to shape more resilient food systems. The focus remains on sustainable production, secure supply chains and effective governance across the wider region.
