UAE's Sheikh Shakhboot Calls For Global Unity At 79th UN General Assembly Amidst Crises
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, addressed the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly. He expressed gratitude to Dennis Francis for his leadership and congratulated Philemon Yang on his new role. Sheikh Shakhboot urged global cooperation to create a better future for coming generations, emphasising the need for political, diplomatic, and technological advancements to preserve life.
The UAE has prioritised progress in various sectors such as development, economy, education, technology, and industry. Sheikh Shakhboot highlighted the UAE's transparent foreign policy that fosters balanced relations with all nations. This approach supports regional and international stability efforts by encouraging dialogue and resolving crises rather than merely managing them.

Sheikh Shakhboot stressed the importance of adhering to international law during conflicts. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and unhindered humanitarian aid access. The UAE condemns violations of international law and urges respect for Security Council resolutions. The ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Sahel, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Haiti were also highlighted as areas needing urgent attention.
The UAE has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts worldwide. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan recently directed $100 million in aid to Lebanon. In Sudan, the UAE contributed $100 million to UN efforts addressing humanitarian needs and established field hospitals in Chad for Sudanese refugees. The UAE also provides support to Palestinians in Gaza through medical aid and evacuation efforts.
In Ukraine, the UAE has facilitated the release of nearly two thousand prisoners of war through mediation between Russia and Ukraine. Sheikh Shakhboot reiterated support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara region and emphasised the importance of peaceful resolutions through diplomacy rather than conflict.
The UAE continues to call on Iran to end its occupation of three islands belonging to the UAE: Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa. Sheikh Shakhboot urged Iran to engage in direct negotiations or seek resolution through the International Court of Justice.
Addressing Global Challenges
Sheikh Shakhboot highlighted the need for reforming multilateral action mechanisms to address global challenges effectively. He called for Security Council reform involving all UN Member States to restore credibility and maintain peace. Developing countries should be central to international efforts while empowering women and youth is crucial.
The UAE is committed to climate action as demonstrated by hosting the 28th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The "UAE Consensus" was adopted by 198 countries aiming at preventing global warming above 1.5 degrees Celsius. The UAE will continue supporting climate initiatives like clean energy solutions with partners such as Azerbaijan and Brazil.
Technological Advancements
The UAE seeks opportunities in advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) for innovative solutions across various sectors. Sheikh Shakhboot emphasised directing international investments towards these technologies for sustainable development progress.
Efforts are underway to address water scarcity issues through initiatives like hosting the "UN Water Conference" in 2026 with Senegal's partnership. The "Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative" launched this year aims at providing sustainable clean water solutions globally.
Sheikh Shakhboot concluded by urging collective action reform during challenging times while working together towards a brighter future that future generations can be proud of.
