UAE Signs Declaration To Enhance Protection Of Humanitarian Personnel At UNGA80

The United Arab Emirates has endorsed the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel. This took place at a significant event in New York before the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, and Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development Affairs and International Organisations, were present to sign the declaration.

The declaration is driven by a coalition of states from different regions. It seeks to turn promises into concrete actions, enhancing the safety and security of humanitarian workers. This aligns with UN Security Council Resolution 2730 (2024). The UAE's commitment includes respecting international humanitarian law and ensuring aid reaches those in need without delay or obstruction.

UAE Signs Humanitarian Protection Declaration

Reem Al Hashimy expressed pride in joining this global initiative. "The UAE is proud to join this global effort to protect humanitarian personnel across conflicts around the world," she stated. As UNGA80 commences, she emphasised that humanitarian work is not just a moral duty but essential for lasting peace.

The UAE plans to continue collaborating with partners to enhance adherence to international humanitarian law. This involves expanding safe and immediate delivery of aid and ensuring accountability for any attacks on humanitarian workers. The country remains dedicated to these principles as part of its broader international commitments.

To further support these efforts, the UAE will engage with the newly formed Group of Friends for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel in Geneva. This platform aims to unite committed nations to foster coordination and share best practices globally. It serves as a means to uphold international humanitarian law worldwide effectively.

This initiative underscores the UAE's dedication to safeguarding those who deliver aid in conflict zones. By participating in such platforms, the UAE seeks to promote better coordination among states and ensure that humanitarian personnel are protected while performing their critical roles.

The UAE's actions reflect its ongoing commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian principles. By signing this declaration, it reinforces its role in promoting peace and security through effective humanitarian action.
