UAE Hosts Seminar On European Union Sanctions And Strengthening Cooperation In Abu Dhabi

The UAE recently hosted a seminar in Abu Dhabi focusing on "European Union Sanctions and Enhancing Cooperation to Strengthen Sanction Effectiveness." This event brought together representatives from the UAE's public sector, providing an in-depth look at the EU sanctions framework. Discussions covered financial restrictions, trade and dual-use limitations, and measures affecting energy, transport logistics, and trade flows.

Organised by the European Commission alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the EU Delegation in the UAE, the seminar aimed to deepen understanding of EU sanctions. Saeed Al Hajeri, Assistant Minister for Economic and Trade Affairs, highlighted the importance of UAE-EU relations in addressing these sanctions. He noted that this seminar marks a crucial step towards enhancing dialogue on this significant topic.

Lucie Berger, Head of the EU Delegation to the UAE, stated: "This seminar is an important step to increasing awareness of EU sanctions and their application and to prevent possible circumvention of these measures by private sector. Preventing sanctions circumvention is a priority for the EU and we look forward to continuing this cooperation both at political and technical level, including with support from a newly appointed officer to further this work in our Delegation in Abu Dhabi."

The seminar included participation from various UAE authorities such as the Ministry of Economy, Secretariat General of the National Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CFT) Committee, Ministry of Justice, Central Bank of the UAE, Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), Economic Security Centre of Dubai, and Executive Office for Control and Non-Proliferation (EOCN).

During discussions, insights were shared on EU sanctions application along with trends and challenges within its framework. Key areas addressed included financial measures, trade restrictions, sector-specific impacts, compliance issues, and enforcement challenges. Both sides expressed commitment to ongoing collaboration on shared interests related to sanctions.

The seminar underscored open communication as vital for tackling complex issues surrounding sanctions. Participants agreed on maintaining transparency and ensuring compliance while working together to address challenges effectively. This aligns with the UAE’s approach of fostering international partnerships based on mutual trust.

This event reflects a concerted effort by both regions to enhance cooperation in sanction-related matters. By engaging in constructive dialogue and sharing expertise, they aim to uphold global standards while benefiting both jurisdictions through strengthened ties.
