UAE's Pivotal Role In Advancing Global Sustainability Efforts Highlighted By Seychelles President
Wavel Ramkalawan, President of Seychelles, emphasised the UAE's significant contribution to global sustainability and renewable energy initiatives. He acknowledged the strong bilateral ties between the UAE and Seychelles, especially in addressing climate challenges. Speaking at the World Future Energy Summit 2025 during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, he described the summit as a key venue for exploring cutting-edge clean energy technologies and global experiences.
Ramkalawan expressed gratitude to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his ongoing support. He highlighted Seychelles' eagerness to learn from the UAE's sustainable practices and advanced technologies that improve energy efficiency. This cooperation extends to economic and tourism sectors, with national carriers like Emirates and Etihad Airways playing vital roles in boosting Seychelles' tourism industry.

The President of Seychelles discussed plans to enhance energy production through modern wind turbines, aiming to generate about 5 megawatts of electricity efficiently even in low wind conditions. This initiative is expected to contribute over 20 megawatts of clean energy to Seychelles' grid. These efforts reflect a strategic partnership between Seychelles and the UAE in supporting economic growth and tourism.
Seychelles has already made significant strides in renewable energy with projects like a 5-megawatt photovoltaic station and a 7.5-megawatt wind turbine project. These projects have reduced reliance on fossil fuels. The country plans to unveil more energy projects that will further advance this crucial sector.
Upcoming clean energy projects include two floating photovoltaic stations on Praslin Island and another island, with a combined capacity of 12 megawatts. These initiatives aim to increase renewable energy's share in Seychelles' electricity consumption beyond its current level of around 70 megawatts, potentially reaching 100 megawatts.
During Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Seychelles seeks to attract modern technologies like battery storage systems. Ramkalawan noted that these developments would elevate renewable energy's contribution to over a quarter of the nation's total electricity usage.
The collaboration between Seychelles and the UAE exemplifies their commitment to sustainable development goals through advanced technology adoption in clean energy sectors. This partnership not only supports economic growth but also strengthens their shared vision for a sustainable future.
