UAE And Republic Of Korea Explore Medical Cooperation In Radiation Oncology For Advanced Cancer Treatments
The Medical Korea 2025 symposium took place in Abu Dhabi, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI). The event focused on "New Horizons in Radiation Therapy: Particle Beam Therapy," gathering international experts in radiation oncology at Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi. This initiative aims to foster scientific collaboration between the UAE and Korea, particularly in advanced cancer treatment technologies like proton and carbon ion therapy.
The symposium's primary goal was to enhance academic exchange and clinical cooperation between the two nations. It emphasised innovative cancer treatments, addressing the global demand for effective medical solutions. Both countries are committed to advancing precision medicine and ensuring high-quality patient care. This collaboration highlights their dedication to tackling cancer challenges through cutting-edge therapies.

Park Jong Kyoung, Minister and Consul General of the Korean Embassy in the UAE, delivered a keynote speech. He cited WHO statistics, noting over 20 million annual cancer diagnoses worldwide, with 10 million deaths. He projected that cancer cases could exceed 35 million annually within 25 years. Park stressed the importance of unified efforts between Korea and the UAE to address this global health challenge.
Park highlighted Korea's use of advanced radiation technologies like proton and carbon ion therapy in clinical settings. He acknowledged the UAE's significant steps towards a healthy life free from cancer, such as introducing a carbon ion accelerator facility. This reflects both nations' commitment to leveraging technology for better healthcare outcomes.
The strategic partnership between Korea and the UAE began with the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in 2009. Park noted that this partnership has expanded into nuclear, energy, defence, and investment sectors. He expressed hope that it would continue to grow into healthcare, further solidifying ties between the two countries.
Cancer remains a leading cause of death in both Korea and the UAE. Medical professionals from both countries are actively working towards curing this disease. The symposium underscored their shared commitment to confronting cancer through scientific collaboration and technological advancements.
The event concluded with a strong emphasis on continuing cooperation between Korea and the UAE in healthcare. By focusing on innovative treatments like particle beam therapy, both nations aim to improve patient outcomes and contribute to global efforts against cancer.
