UAE's Bold Move Against Water Scarcity: $150M Partnership With XPRIZE Announced

In a significant move to combat global water scarcity, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has overseen the launch of a groundbreaking partnership. This collaboration between the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative and XPRIZE introduces a $150 million investment to kickstart the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition. With a total prize purse of $119 million, this five-year global contest is set to inspire worldwide innovators to enhance the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of water desalination technologies.

The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative is at the forefront of elevating the critical issue of water scarcity on the global stage. It aims to accelerate the development, testing, and large-scale deployment of innovative and sustainable technological solutions. These efforts are crucial in addressing the threats water scarcity poses to individuals, businesses, and communities across the globe. The initiative emphasizes targeted investment, rapid technological advancement, and increased international collaboration to tackle this escalating challenge.

UAE and XPRIZE Tackle Water Scarcity

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, expressed concern over the current solutions to the water scarcity crisis. He highlighted the urgent need for new solutions to prevent a range of dire scenarios. The initiative is dedicated to working with global stakeholders to discover new ideas, validate their effectiveness, and implement them efficiently.

The announcement ceremony took place at the historic Niqa Bin Ateej Water Tank. It was attended by notable figures including H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, among other dignitaries.

Water scarcity is an escalating issue affecting billions worldwide. Factors contributing to this crisis include population growth, infrastructure challenges, environmental pollution, and climate change. Without decisive action, water scarcity could lead to catastrophic outcomes such as loss of life, food insecurity, mass migration, geopolitical instability, and potential armed conflicts over water resources.

The establishment of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative aligns with broader UAE efforts to address global water scarcity. This includes the publication of a discussion paper in September 2023 titled "Ripple Effect: Water Scarcity – The Hidden Threat to Global Security and Prosperity." This paper serves as a global call to action for a unified international response to this worsening issue.

Peter H. Diamandis, MD, Founder and Executive Chairman of XPRIZE, emphasized that the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition is a call to scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. The competition aims to transform water scarcity into water abundance through innovative desalination solutions that can unlock Earth’s ocean waters for clean and sustainable use.

This partnership with XPRIZE Foundation seeks to foster innovation by incentivizing crowd-sourced solutions that are scientifically viable. The goal is to create a more equitable and abundant future for all by addressing one of humanity's most pressing challenges.
