UAE Delegation Concludes Participation In IMF And World Bank Group Annual Meetings In Washington

The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Finance and the UAE Central Bank, recently concluded its participation in the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) held in Washington from 21st to 26th October. The delegation was led by Mohamed Hadi Al Hussaini, Minister of State for Financial Affairs, and included key officials from both institutions.

During these meetings, discussions spanned a wide range of global issues, including economic outlooks, poverty eradication, economic development, and international aid. Participants engaged with international economic leaders such as finance ministers, central bank governors, private sector executives, and civil society representatives to address challenges facing the global financial system.

The Minister of State for Financial Affairs emphasised the UAE’s significant role in fostering international cooperation to tackle global economic challenges. He reiterated the country's dedication to promoting financial stability and sustainable development on both regional and global scales. The UAE aims to enhance innovation in the financial sector by building digital infrastructure to boost financial inclusion.

Al Hussaini stated that "The UAE will continue to support international initiatives aimed at driving sustainable development by investing in innovative financial solutions that not only bolster economic growth but also create new opportunities for progress." He highlighted the UAE's commitment to the Paris Agreement and collaboration with global partners to ensure economic sustainability.

During the annual meetings, Al Hussaini chaired the main session of the 2024 WBG-IMF Development Committee meeting. This marked his fourth time leading such a session. Discussions focused on strengthening development finance within the World Bank Group to tackle global challenges like climate change and digital transformation. The need for a comprehensive approach to enhance international financial institutions' capacity was also highlighted.

The meeting explored innovative financial solutions such as green bonds for managing debt while supporting environmentally friendly projects. Al Hussaini noted substantial contributions from the World Bank Group, including US$330 billion in development finance and $90 billion in climate finance over recent years.

Global Economic Resilience

The International Monetary and Financial Committee held a session during these meetings. Discussions examined IMF’s assessment of global economy trends, focusing on trade growth slowdown, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain issues. Al Hussaini acknowledged advanced economies' resilience despite challenges while stressing IMF's crucial role in supporting global economies amid moderate growth outlooks.

He emphasised multilateral cooperation's importance in safeguarding trade routes globally while addressing debt vulnerabilities alongside ensuring energy security through financing climate change adaptation efforts.

Engagement with Global Leaders

The UAE delegation participated in several key meetings including G20 finance ministers’ sessions under Brazil’s presidency discussing multilateral development banks' efficiency enhancement strategies alongside government-private sector cooperation strengthening efforts towards addressing developmental priorities effectively through approved roadmaps implementation mechanisms monitoring processes.

Members celebrated achievements made over 25 years since G20 Financial Track inception while examining prospects regarding future stability within global finances landscape contextually speaking about advancements achieved thus far concerning digital infrastructure innovations promoting inclusivity via advanced technologies employed therein nationally speaking specifically referencing contributions
