UAE Concludes National Alignment Accelerator To Prepare For The 2026 UN Water Conference

The United Arab Emirates has successfully concluded the 'National Alignment Accelerator for the 2026 UN Water Conference'. This initiative was part of a series of joint workshops organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government Accelerators Center under the Prime Minister’s Office. The Accelerator aims to unify visions and enhance readiness for hosting the United Nations Water Conference in December 2026, co-hosted with Senegal.

More than 100 leaders and officials from 41 government, private, and academic entities participated in these workshops. They worked alongside national partners to identify strategic opportunities, improve cross-sector collaboration, and define practical workstreams that support water sustainability at both national and international levels. The workshops were held at the Government Accelerators Center in Dubai and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi.

UAE Completes Preparation for UN Water Conference

The workshops addressed key national water-related challenges, aiming to enhance inter-entity alignment. They also sought to strengthen the UAE's preparedness for the global conference by developing innovative initiatives and showcasing national achievements internationally. Participants contributed expertise to shape future pathways for advancing water sustainability, resource management, and innovation.

Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, stated, "Through these idea-generation Accelerator workshops, the UAE demonstrated its commitment to translating water sustainability priorities into tangible, collective action." He emphasised that bringing government entities together lays the groundwork for practical solutions contributing to the success of the 2026 UN Water Conference.

The idea-generation Accelerator focused on five key priority themes: Innovation and Investments, Water Resources Management, Knowledge and Behaviour Change, Digital Integration of Data and Governance, and Sustainable Humanitarian Response. More than 50 national and regional water initiatives were highlighted during these sessions to support broader efforts ensuring water security.

Huda Al Hashemi, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Strategic Affairs, affirmed that water remains a core pillar of government priorities. She noted that continuous attention from UAE leadership supports sustainable development objectives. The National Alignment Accelerator served as an open platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange to bolster national preparations for hosting the 2026 UN Water Conference.

Global Cooperation Efforts

The United Nations Water Conference 2026 aims to accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6: "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". The three-day conference will feature national plenary sessions alongside six interactive dialogues focusing on various aspects of water management.

In July, all 193 UN Member States endorsed six priorities for these dialogues: Water for People, Prosperity, Planet Earth; Cooperation; Multilateral Processes; Investing in Water. Nearly 900 organisations from 90 countries contributed insights defining their scope. Preparations are underway for a High-Level Preparatory Meeting in Dakar from January 26–27, 2026.

Commitment to Global Leadership

The outcomes from these workshops will strengthen UAE's participation in the conference while reinforcing its leadership role in global water policy development. Government entities will continue collaborating on implementing identified workstreams ensuring sustained progress with long-term impact.

With domestic and international preparatory processes launched, UAE reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable water management locally and globally. It aims to strengthen international cooperation addressing urgent challenges like ensuring water security for people ecosystems future generations.
