UAE Energy Minister Assesses Damage And Plans Resilience After Heavy Rainfall

In a proactive response to the exceptional rainfall events that struck the UAE in April, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, embarked on an extensive tour of the eastern coast. His visit covered several federal roads and dams adversely affected by the heavy rains. The primary objective was to assess and expedite the rehabilitation efforts aimed at enhancing the resilience and efficiency of critical infrastructure against future rain-induced damages.

The Minister's directives were clear: prioritize maintenance to safeguard public safety, protect properties, and minimize potential rain damage. A significant focus was placed on the rock berm project, identified as a strategic and enduring solution to fortify federal roads against future challenges. Al Mazrouei's insights revealed ongoing efforts to conduct a comprehensive study on the necessity for dam expansion, highlighting a collaborative approach with strategic partners to bolster infrastructure against floods.

"The Ministry has put in place an integrated operational plan to repair affected federal roads and set up precautionary measures to ensure the continuity and preparedness of rainwater drainage network. We are working diligently on developing a host of solutions to mitigate the damage caused by rain events in the winter," stated Al Mazrouei. This statement underscores a commitment to developing a robust infrastructure capable of managing large water volumes through efficient rainwater drainage systems and enhanced dam capacities.

Concluding his tour, Al Mazrouei emphasized the critical need for forward-thinking and cooperation among federal and local entities to future-proof infrastructure effectively. He expressed gratitude towards government teams, the private sector, and community members for their swift action and support in the aftermath of the floods.

The unprecedented April rainfall tested the UAE's infrastructure resilience, with 103 dams and lakes under the Ministry's management collectively retaining 40 million cubic metres of water. This volume represents half of their total storage capacity of 80 million cubic metres, highlighting both the challenge and response capability in face of natural adversities.
