UAE Opens First Plant Genetic Resources Centre In Al Ain To Preserve Biodiversity

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) recently marked a significant milestone with the opening of the region's first Plant Genetic Resources Centre located in Al Ain City. This pioneering facility is dedicated to the conservation of seeds and tissues from all wild plant types and local agricultural species that are crucial to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of notable figures such as H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Yas bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi.

During his tour, Sheikh Hamdan explored the centre's display and education area, which highlights the significance of preserving local plant species and their conservation methods. The facility is equipped with a seed processing and testing laboratory, a herbarium, and a genetic sequencing laboratory, all featuring state-of-the-art technologies.

The centre not only focuses on preserving genetic resources but also aims to improve vegetation cover and restore degraded natural habitats. It includes a greenhouse that simulates five distinct natural habitats found in the UAE, showcasing over 50 local plant species. This initiative also serves as a research and educational platform for university students across the country.

Sheikh Hamdan underscored the centre's vital role in safeguarding essential species and their genetic traits, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts, and enhancing the technical and scientific skills of local professionals.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, elaborated on the centre's capabilities, including seed preservation, tissue culture operations, and genomic sequencing of wild plants. The facility also features an exhibition area designed to educate visitors about the significance of local flora.

The establishment of this centre was made possible through collaborations with various local and international entities, such as the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture. These partnerships were instrumental throughout the design and implementation phases of the project.

EAD has been actively engaged in efforts to rehabilitate vegetation cover within the UAE by establishing protected areas and wildlife reserves. Projects aimed at restoring wild habitats through the planting of native plants and innovative techniques like seed dispersal via drones have been implemented. Designed with sustainability at its core, the centre incorporates solar panels, uses natural materials for insulation, and employs energy-efficient lighting solutions.

In essence, the Plant Genetic Resources Centre in Al Ain City plays an indispensable role in conserving plant biodiversity in the UAE, rehabilitating natural habitats, and fostering research and education in environmental conservation.
