UAE, Italy, And Albania Establish Strategic Partnership For Renewable Energy Cooperation

The UAE, Italy, and Albania have entered a strategic partnership to boost cooperation in renewable energy and infrastructure. This agreement was signed by key ministers from each country, including Dr. Sultan Al Jaber of the UAE, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin of Italy, and Belinda Balluku of Albania. The signing took place during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

This partnership aims to enhance energy security and promote sustainable development in the Mediterranean region. It focuses on deploying large-scale renewable energy projects in Albania, particularly solar photovoltaics, wind, and hybrid solutions with potential battery storage. A significant portion of this energy will be transmitted to Italy.

The framework includes plans for a cross-border electricity transmission interconnection between Albania and Italy. This initiative is expected to strengthen regional cooperation and support the transition to clean energy. The collaboration leverages the UAE's expertise in renewable energy, Albania's natural resources, and Italy's advanced energy market.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber stated that global interconnectivity is crucial for increasing renewable energy capacity, driving decarbonisation, and boosting economic growth. He emphasised the UAE's role in leading global energy transformation efforts through this collaboration.

Gilberto Pichetto Fratin expressed satisfaction with Italy's involvement in the partnership. He highlighted its potential to enhance Italy's position as an energy hub in the Mediterranean while strengthening ties with Balkan countries. This cooperation aligns with climate objectives set during COP28 in Dubai.

Belinda Balluku noted that this partnership is a significant step for Albania's renewable energy goals. By collaborating with the UAE and Italy, Albania aims to unlock sustainable growth potential and create long-term economic opportunities.

Joint Venture Initiatives

The agreement builds on a previous joint venture term sheet signed between Masdar and Korporata Elektroenergjitike Shqiptare (KESH) at COP29 last year. This venture focuses on developing renewable projects in Albania using various technologies like solar PV, wind, and hybrid solutions.

Several dignitaries attended the signing ceremony, including H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, and HE Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy.

This strategic framework lays the groundwork for a greener future in the Mediterranean region by fostering collaboration among nations with shared renewable energy ambitions.
