UAE Hosting Of Cospas-Sarsat Meeting Emphasises Global Humanitarian Commitment
The 39th Cospas-Sarsat Joint Committee Meeting is being hosted in the UAE, marking a significant event for the country. Henrik Smith, leading the Canadian delegation, commended the UAE's commitment to global humanitarian efforts. The meeting underscores the UAE's dedication to supporting international rescue missions and enhancing cooperation among member states.
Smith highlighted the importance of the Cospas-Sarsat Programme, which is a vital global initiative aimed at saving lives. This programme utilises a satellite-based system to detect and transmit distress signals in real time. It supports search and rescue operations worldwide by specialised authorities, ensuring timely responses to emergencies.

The meeting in the UAE is pivotal as it enhances the programme’s operational efficiency. Currently, Cospas-Sarsat connects with about 70 satellites, 130 ground stations, and 30 control centres globally. These resources collectively contribute to saving approximately 3,000 lives each year through coordinated search and rescue missions.
Smith expressed his appreciation for the UAE's hospitality during this event. He noted that the country's efforts in providing an ideal environment for all delegations reflect its commitment to international cooperation. The warm reception has been instrumental in facilitating productive discussions among participants.
This meeting holds special importance as it is being held in the UAE for the first time since its membership began in 2009. The UAE has played a crucial role in advancing the Cospas-Sarsat system by adhering to high international standards in search and rescue operations. This commitment has strengthened its position within the organisation's nearly 45 member states.
Henrik Smith emphasised their shared goal of saving lives while working together in the UAE. "We are here in the UAE today with a shared humanitarian goal of saving lives," he stated. "And we look forward to working together to achieve further progress and enhance our performance, enabling us to carry out our missions more swiftly and accurately."
The gathering signifies a collaborative effort towards improving global humanitarian initiatives. By hosting this event, the UAE demonstrates its dedication to fostering international partnerships aimed at enhancing life-saving operations worldwide.
