UAE Advances Green Transportation With EV Charging Station Expansion

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), represented by UAEV, and Emirates Transport will collaborate to install and operate EV charging stations at Emirates Transport buildings. This initiative supports UAEV's mission to promote green mobility and aligns with the UAE's goal of having 50% of vehicles on its roads be electric by 2050.

Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI and Chairman of UAEV, emphasised that UAEV is dedicated to enhancing green transportation. He stated, "Through this collaboration, we will explore ways to make the public transport sector more sustainable. This involves reviewing the use of hydrogen vehicles in the future and examining sustainable modes of transportation. This will contribute to decarbonising the transport sector, in line with the UAE’s net zero by 2050 goal."

UAE Expands Green Transport Efforts

Al Olama also highlighted that MoEI and Emirates Transport will jointly develop policies to encourage EV adoption in the private sector. He noted that as of 2023, EVs constitute approximately 3% of all vehicles in the UAE. The International Energy Agency reported that the UAE ranks second in the Middle East for EV sales, with electric vehicles making up 13% of total car sales in 2023.

Alex Rentier, CEO of Emirates Transport, remarked that integrating EV charging stations into the transport network helps reduce carbon emissions and promotes eco-friendly transportation options. He added that UAEV plans to install 100 EV chargers in 2024 and aims for a total of 1,000 chargers across the UAE by 2030.

This collaboration between MoEI and Emirates Transport is a significant step towards achieving a sustainable transport sector. By expanding the national infrastructure for charging electric vehicles, they aim to support the growing EV market and contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

The move aligns with broader efforts to decarbonise various sectors within the country. It also reflects a commitment to exploring innovative solutions like hydrogen vehicles and other sustainable transportation modes.

In conclusion, this partnership underscores the UAE's dedication to environmental sustainability through practical measures aimed at increasing EV usage and supporting green mobility initiatives.
