UAE Floating Hospital Launches In Al Arish To Aid Wounded Palestinians

The United Arab Emirates has taken a significant step forward in providing medical assistance to the Palestinian people with the inauguration of the UAE Floating Hospital. Anchored in the Port of Al-Arish, the hospital began its operations by welcoming its first patients, Gazans suffering from various injuries and fractures. This initiative aligns with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's directives to support the Gaza Strip's populace as part of the ‘Gallant Knight 3’ humanitarian operation.

A 20-year-old Palestinian man, who sustained gunshot wounds and shrapnel injuries leading to a dislocated and fractured shoulder along with nerve damage, was the first to undergo surgery at this new facility. The operation aimed to reposition his shoulder, with plans for a follow-up surgery to address the nerve damage. This marks the beginning of a crucial healthcare initiative aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected in the region.

UAE Hospital Ship Aids Palestinians

The Floating Hospital, a collaborative effort between the Department of Health- Abu Dhabi and AD Ports Group, boasts a diverse medical and administrative staff of 100 individuals. Specialties covered include anaesthesia, general surgery, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, alongside nursing and support staff. With a capacity of 100 beds, the hospital is well-equipped with operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology, laboratory services, a pharmacy, and medical cabinets.

Dr. Falah Al Mahmoud, Director of the Floating Hospital, emphasized that this initiative would significantly enhance the medical support system for the people of Gaza. The facility is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment to provide comprehensive treatment and medical care according to international standards and protocols. Upon docking at Al-Arish port, it immediately began receiving wounded and sick Palestinians, offering them necessary care, treatment, and medicines.

The Floating Hospital's design includes a helipad and a marine boat to facilitate rapid response to emergency cases requiring swift medical intervention. A comprehensive evaluation process is in place for all incoming patients, ensuring they receive appropriate care through surgical interventions or tailored treatment programs.

Palestinian patients have expressed their gratitude towards the UAE and its leadership for this humanitarian gesture. They highlighted how this initiative reflects the UAE's steadfast commitment to supporting the Palestinian people under all circumstances.

Building on Success

This floating hospital builds on the success of an integrated field hospital opened in Gaza in December 2023. The field hospital has 200 beds and a dedicated team of 83 volunteers from 21 nations. It has performed over 764 major and minor surgeries and addressed more than 6,620 cases requiring medical intervention. This includes providing first aid, performing necessary surgeries to save lives, offering treatments and medicines, and delivering care and intensive care for those cases.

The establishment of the UAE Floating Hospital represents a significant milestone in providing essential healthcare services to those affected in the Gaza Strip. It underscores the UAE's commitment to humanitarian assistance and its readiness to support communities in need across the globe.
