UAE Launches First Quantum-Secure Communications Testbed To Enhance Digital Security In Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is taking a major step in securing its digital future with the launch of the UAE's first Testbed for quantum-secure communications. This initiative, a collaboration between ADGM, ADGM Academy, Technology Innovation Institute (TII), Hub71, and ASPIRE, aims to enhance digital infrastructure by exploring ultra-secure data transfer using quantum technology. The project represents a significant move towards safeguarding against cyber threats and ensuring data privacy.
The test network, established in Abu Dhabi's international financial centre, ADGM, serves as a "living lab" for secure communications. TII has implemented its Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) solution here, creating a unique commercial test network. This setup allows stakeholders to engage with an operational QKD system, testing use cases and understanding its potential applications in real-world scenarios.

The network comprises a three-node QKD deployment within ADGM's jurisdiction. Quantum devices at each site provide encryption keys for secure communication across the network. This ensures data enjoys top-level forward security and immunity to retroactive attacks. Such protection is crucial as quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptographic systems are on the horizon.
Salem Al Darei, CEO of ADGM Authority, emphasised Abu Dhabi's commitment to digital security and innovation. He stated, "Abu Dhabi and ADGM are committed to staying ahead of the curve when it comes to digital security and innovation. Our collaboration with TII, along with other strategic partners, stands as a testament to this commitment."
This initiative is facilitated by ASPIRE, ATRC's innovation acceleration arm. It bridges advanced research with practical application while fostering cross-sector collaboration. Dr. Najwa Aaraj of TII highlighted the project's significance: "This initiative marks a major step forward in our mission to translate advanced research into real-world impact."
Mansoor Jaffar from ADGM Academy noted the milestone's importance in advancing knowledge and addressing real-world challenges through research. He remarked that this launch is not just technological progress but also a strategic enabler for developing secure financial systems.
Advancing Abu Dhabi’s Innovation Ecosystem
Ahmad Ali Alwan of Hub71 expressed support for developing quantum-secure communications as part of their mission to accelerate startup growth through advanced technologies. He stated that this collaboration showcases Abu Dhabi's strong innovation ecosystem and shared ambition to transform digital infrastructure.
Stephane Timpano from ASPIRE praised ADGM for adopting this transformative technology and commended TII for developing a world-class solution. He said that ASPIRE is proud to facilitate this collaboration and help translate advanced research into practical impact.
This initiative positions Abu Dhabi at the forefront of global quantum advancements by bringing quantum-secure communications into a live commercial environment. It empowers the UAE’s innovation ecosystem to prepare for a future where quantum technology plays a crucial role in securing digital communications.
