UAE's E& Partners With Global Telcos For Multilingual AI-Driven Telecom Initiative

e&, along with SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Singtel, and SoftBank Corp., have solidified their commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI) in the telecommunications sector by signing a JV agreement. This landmark agreement, executed at TM Forum's DTW24-Ignite, follows their earlier announcement during MWC Barcelona 2024 to form a JV under the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA) umbrella. The aim is to co-develop and introduce Large Language Models (LLM) specifically designed for the telecom industry, enhancing customer service and operational efficiency through innovative AI applications.

This initiative promises to cater to the diverse needs of the telecom industry by deploying AI applications tailored for the founding parties' markets, potentially reaching an extensive customer base of around 1.3 billion across 50 countries. The Telco LLM will support multiple languages, including Korean, English, German, Arabic, and Bahasa, among others. Its launch is pending customary regulatory approvals. The JV plans to invest equally in initial working capital to develop the Telco LLM, which aims to revolutionize customer interactions through digital assistants and AI-driven solutions.

The commitment to AI innovation was further underscored at the second Global Telco AI Roundtable (GTAR) held at DTW24. The GTAR showcased the significant strides made by the GTAA in fostering collaboration and driving innovation within the telecom sector. Discussions revolved around AI governance systems and AI use cases that are set to redefine the telecom landscape, highlighting the alliance's role in pioneering AI applications within the industry.

SK Telecom’s CEO, Ryu Young-sang, in his opening speech at the GTAR, underscored the transformative impact of AI on the telecom sector. He pointed out that the Global Telco AI Alliance is strategically positioned to play a pivotal role in the global AI ecosystem, as companies worldwide aim to revamp their business strategies through AI. Ryu noted, "through the Telco LLM JV new business opportunities will be created, and enhanced levels of customer experiences will be achieved."

Exploring Potential AI Applications for Telecom

The founding members of the GTAA demonstrated potential applications of the LLM for telecommunications, focusing on how it can transform contact center operations and infrastructure management. They illustrated the model's capability to furnish real-time reference answers for agents during calls and perform post-call tasks automatically. Additionally, the model is designed to assist infrastructure operators by providing precise answers to their queries, thereby optimizing their workflows.

This initiative not only aims to enhance the efficiency of telecom operations but also strives to elevate the overall customer experience by utilizing advanced AI technologies. By harnessing the power of multilingual Large Language Models, the alliance seeks to redefine customer interactions and streamline operations across the globe, marking a new era of innovation and collaboration in telecom.
