UAE Ministry Of Defence Joins Forces With Masdar For Abu Dhabi Solar Plants

The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence, in a significant move towards sustainability, has partnered with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, known as Masdar, to embark on the development of multiple solar plants across Abu Dhabi. This initiative is set to be facilitated by Emerge, a collaborative venture between Masdar and France's EDF Group. Emerge will deliver a comprehensive turnkey solution for these projects, encompassing finance, design, procurement, construction, operations, and maintenance over a span of 25 years.

The agreement's signing was graced by notable figures including Major General Sheikh Ahmad Bin Tahnoon Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Deputy Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces; Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and COP28 President; along with executives from Masdar and EDF Group. The ceremony took place at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, marking a pivotal moment in the UAE's journey towards achieving its Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.

UAE Defence and Masdar's Solar Venture

Brigadier General Saeed Al Ketbi from the UAE Ministry of Defence and Abdulaziz Alobaidli from Masdar inked the partnership. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber highlighted the significance of this collaboration in the context of the UAE's climate action efforts, particularly referencing the historic UAE Consensus and Action Agenda agreed upon at COP28. This agreement underscores the nation's commitment to leading by example in climate action and supporting the UAE Armed Forces' Climate Change Strategy.

In December 2023, alongside COP28, the Ministry of Defence unveiled the UAE Armed Forces' Climate Change Strategy. This groundbreaking strategy aims to bolster the Armed Forces' dedication to reducing carbon emissions and fostering active engagement in sustainability transitions. It stands as the first strategy of its kind within the region, showcasing the UAE's proactive stance on environmental stewardship.

Emerge was established in 2021 as a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group with the aim of developing distributed solar, energy storage, and hybrid solutions tailored for commercial and industrial sectors. As an energy services company, Emerge offers clients a seamless pathway to adopting solar power through agreements and energy performance contracting, eliminating any upfront costs for clients. This model not only facilitates easier access to renewable energy but also aligns with the broader objectives of enhancing sustainability across various sectors.

This partnership between the UAE Ministry of Defence and Masdar represents a strategic step forward in integrating renewable energy solutions within national defense infrastructure. It reflects a broader commitment by the UAE to lead by example in global climate action efforts while advancing towards its ambitious Net Zero by 2050 goal.
